Here at Bowbrook Primary School, we intend to provide high-quality music education for every child, from the very early stages of school life in Nursery through to Year 6.
Music allows children to develop other skills and attributes such as regulating emotions, improving language capabilities and hand-eye coordination, listening, memory and concentration skills, it inspires creativity and instils perseverance, teamwork and self-confidence. It is a vehicle for personal expression and plays an important role in personal development.
Our music curriculum is engaging, purposeful and fun. We believe music should be accessible for every child at our school – children from The Cubby join their friends for music-making at a level to suit them. Lessons are carefully sequenced, linked to class topics and in line with Early Years Statutory Framework for the Early Years (Expressive Arts), The National Curriculum for Music and suggested approaches of the Model Music Curriculum. Children from Nursery and KS1 are taught weekly for 30-45 minutes by a visiting music specialist. We have a brand-new exciting array of percussion instruments which the children love exploring and Y1 children are embarking on a term of learning ukulele.
Singing is at the heart of our school, coming together as a whole school for weekly singing assemblies is a highlight of the week. Songs are often accompanied with Makaton, everyone joins in, including Mr Aiston!
We endeavour to improve our curriculum and overall experience for all our pupils, therefore, our curriculum is fluid and constantly evolving as our school grows and our children’s needs evolve. Most importantly, we want to make music a real success in our school. This is something we are careful to nurture and grow.
