Headteacher update

Hope everyone has had an enjoyable week.

This week we have had World Space week and the children have learned a great deal about the planets, our solar system and differences between Earth and Space. We have read about Mae Jemison and how she was inspirational for so many people. We will be looking for a lot more STEM opportunities in the second half of the Autumn term.

We have been running some base line tests across all the areas of Early Years Foundation Stage this half term to ensure all the children receive the best possible support to reach their potential. We are already proud of what our children have achieved in the classroom and we know with the support of our skilled staff, that every child will thrive.

You might have noticed the emphasis we are placing on Makaton to support communication and language in our classes. We are lucky enough to have knowledgeable staff who are currently training some of us to support our little ones.

We still have so many big plans for our school and more deliveries are arriving daily to ensure we have the best facilities possible.

Thank you for your wonderful support.

Sam Aiston

Communication and Language in Early Years

At Bowbrook we are using Makaton to support children and young people in their spoken language. It is used alongside spoken language as a visual prompt to support children when communicating their needs and wants. Makaton supports speech and language difficulties, unclear speech, selective mutism, developmental and language disorders and EAL.

Language not only supports a child’s ability to communicate but also allows them to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions and that is why supporting language development in the early years is crucial.

‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’

At Bowbrook ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’ captures our ethos. This is evident in our swimming sessions. We are in week 4 of our swimming lessons at Prestfelde School and ALL the children are progressing. Many of the children lacked water confidence or felt nervous about having lessons altogether. However we have felt those nerves in our tummy and been really brave!

As well as improving our gross motor skills, going swimming has helped us manage our emotions, develop our self confidence and be resilience and persistent. Great job everybody!

We are looking for a Parent Governor

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are writing to ask for nominations for the role of parent local governor on our Local Governing Body (LGB).  There are 2 positions to fill.

The role of the LGB

The school’s LGB is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and financial performance. The LGB is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The role of a parent local governor

As a parent local governor, you’ll work with the LGB to ensure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in ensuring that the LGB is connected with, and is aware of the views of, parents and the local community.

To be a parent local governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
  • Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • The specific skills required to ensure the governing board delivers effective governance.

Being a parent local governor can be demanding but very rewarding.  All local governors serve a three-year term of office and under usual circumstances, can expect to spend between 10 and 20 days a year on governance duties.  These include:

  • attending meetings of the LGB, usually outside of school hours and contributing to LGB business;
  • reading reports and papers and keeping up to date on the progress that the school is making; and
  • visiting the school from time to time during the school day.

You will have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and sign the local governors’ Code of Conduct.  A copy of the Code of Conduct, Role Description can be found on LGB’s pages of the school’s website.

https://bowbrookprimary.co.uk/home/key-info/governance/

We have a supportive induction process which will enable a period of settling into the role.

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying for the role, please email the Governance Professional, Carole Warner by email by 10am Tuesday 17 October (carole.warner@318education.co.uk).

You should also include a personal statement (approximate 250 words) to support your application.  We encourage candidates to be succinct when setting out the skills, experience and attributes that they can bring to the LGB to support their application. Nominations of other parents will be accepted, but please seek their prior consent.

Applications/nominations can only be accepted from parents or carers who have children registered at the school on the day that nominations close. If we receive more applications/nominations than there are vacancies, an election will be carried out. We will inform you after the nomination deadline if we have to do this.

If you have any queries about this process or would like to find out more about the role, please contact the Chair of the LGB Mr Phil Wilson or the Headteacher, Mr Sam Aiston.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Phil Wilson                                                           Mr Sam Aiston

Safari Park

Today we have visited the Safari Park. It was our first ‘big’ school trip and we loved it! The children were so excited and had great fun. This trip will form the basis of some of next week’s writing.

Our children represented the school brilliantly!

Arbour update

Firstly I would like to thank you for your patience whilst I have been resolving issues with Arbor access. You should now be able to log in to Arbor, to pay for all future clubs and trips.

From Monday the 9th of October please use Arbor to book before and after school club sessions for your child. You will receive an invoice for all sessions attended before this date.

For parents with children in nursery, you will continue to receive a monthly invoice for Lunch time care and meals, these sessions do not need to be pre-booked through Arbor.

If you have any questions or need any further information, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Sarah Woosnam

Where do I start this week?

Thank you so much for all the people who turned up last Saturday for our Opening. The weather was not great but so many people braved it to ensure it was a great success.

Following this, we had our Community Show around on Tuesday and we had many members of the community have a tour of the school and pose some questions for myself and some of the members of the Bowmer and Kirkland team. We are really keen to establish strong links with the people in the surrounding area.

We also had our first Open Morning for potential Reception children this week. Applications open at the start of November and we are hoping that many children want to come and join us.

The children have had another adventurous week and are rounding it off with a trip to the Safari park! I am sure there will be some tired children.

Thank you for your support. Please get in touch if you have any ideas regarding opportunities you want for your children. We are determined to make their experiences amazing!

Certificates this week!

Every week some of our children get a certificate for either following our 3 school rules: Be kind, Be Ready, Be safe or for ‘feeling the fear and doing it anyway’.

Well done to these three superstars this week!

The children love Breakfast Club!

Our children love Breakfast Club. We look to provide a bit of exercise, a range of activities and promote independence skills in the preparation of the food!

Certificates this week!

Well done to these little superstars on winning a certificate.

Certificates are given out to children who follow our 3 golden rules: Be Kind, Be Ready, Be Safe and also to children who have been brave and overcome their nerves. We are very proud of them!

Reverend Charlotte visit

Reverend Charlotte paid us a visit today. She introduced herself to the children and spoke about her family. She will be a regular visitor to school and will be teaching the children about her role in the community. The children asked her some super questions!

Illustrator visit

We were delighted this week to have local Illustrator Gisella Robinson visit us.  You will have seen Gisella’s art in town, she painted one of the BT boxes with the Dodo.  The children created some dragonflies and caterpillars that they will be displaying in the Art gallery in a couple of weeks and had a go at screen printing.  You wouldn’t believe that this beautiful art work came from Reception and Nursery.

Caterpillars

It was a busy week for Caterpillars. The children enjoyed lots of Phonics, Science, PE and even a relax in Mr Aiston’s office!

Headteacher update

Another action packed week at Bowbrook. We had our first Standards Review and our first Governor meeting. The Standards Review is when the CEO and Deputy CEO quality assure the education that we are offering. It was incredibly positive and useful for us. We will soon be seeking Parent Governors to join us and help set the strategic direction for the school. More information about this will follow.

We have our Grand Opening/ Family Fair tomorrow that we are looking forward to. Hopefully we get good weather and we all have a great time.

The children have been swimming again this week and have been to Inside Out. They have also been visited by an illustrator and Reverend Charlotte. We are committed to ensuring that they get a wealth of opportunities.

Have a great weekend.

Open classrooms

Tonight we showed around the parents and carers of children from Dragonflies and Caterpillars. We love to show off our fabulous setting and it is a great opportunity for the children to show their families where the action happens!

After school clubs!

These week we have kicked off our After School Clubs. We have had Dance, Cookery, Board Games and Football at the school of opportunity.

Celebration Assembly

Well done to these 3 little superstars who were given a certificate for being ambassadors for our value of being kind and for also showing bravery and ‘feeling the fear and doing it anyway’. We are proud of you!

Headteacher update

Our second week has been fantastic. Our children have started swimming and began a range of After school clubs. We are encouraging children to take risks (whilst ensuring they are safe!) and take themselves out of their comfort zone and that is what they are doing!

We are well underway with assessing the children’s Reading and Maths ability and producing next steps to ensure they reach their potential.

We are embedding our 3 rules of: Be Kind, Be Ready, Be Safe and we are proud of the attitude of our pupils.

This is a wonderful environment to work in and there is no doubt that the children will thrive. Have a great week.

Dragonflies went swimming!

Our Reception class had their first swimming lesson at Prestfelde school this week. There was a lot of nerves but our children felt the fear and did it anyway. They were very brave and we all ended up having great fun!

Cooking with Katie from Katie’s Kitchen

Our children had a great time making dove biscuits to celebrate National Day of Peace which links to our school value: Be Kind.

Thank you Katie!

Learning about Jewish New Year

Mia spoke to the class about Jewish New Year and how her family will be celebrating it.

She brought in sweet treats of apple and honey for her friends to share in class.

Building our community links

Mr Aiston met up with Reverend Charlotte from the Oxon Parish Church this morning to put in plans for how we can support the pupils, staff and community of Bowbrook.

Our staff have been checking on the progress and it is looking fantastic!

Our first site visit for the team!
